What do presidents do after they leave office?

I've always been curious about what presidents do once they are done serving their terms in office. Do they go on to work a "regular" job at a corporation? Does anybody know a reliable source of this kind of information?

Public Comments

  1. Retirement. They write a book about themselves, play lots of golf, and then do speaking engagements around the country.
  2. Depends, most have it made for life. They write books, or sometimes work as ambassadors or advisors. Some just retire and work on their libraries. There's really no rule. Some past presidents continued their political career after leaving office.
  3. They go home and live off the money they screwed us out off over the years
  4. A wide variety of occupations, depending on the circumstance. Some go into retirement, such as the older George Bush, some get into humanitarian programs, such as Jimmy Carter. Some, as you suggested, go into business. It varies, but an ex-president can get involved in one of any number of things, depending on what the person looks forward to doing.
